How to keep Cool at Walt Disney World

Sweltering Walt Disney World summer days seem a lot more bearable when we mist and fan and cool off – and we’ve been known to ride Pirates of the Caribbean multiple times, sip most of the flavors at Club Cool at Epcot, aimlessly browse in the Animation Gallery at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or hope to get extra wet at Kali River Rapids at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Soaring temperatures are the perfect excuse for cold treats. Really cold treats. And all four theme parks have plenty, but we have a favorite in each park.

What is your favorite sweet treat to cool off?

Our picks:

Magic Kingdom. Hands down, the Pineapple Float with pineapple Dole Whip and pineapple juice at Aloha Isle in Adventureland. Maybe a tart, juicy pineapple spear on the side just for good measure (and a healthy dose of Vitamin C). Find a shady spot and enjoy a taste of childhood.

Epcot. A toss-up between a brain-freezing shaved ice with fruit syrup (tangerine is our favorite) at the Kaki Gori kiosk at the Japan Pavilion or a mango margarita from the kiosk at Mexico Pavilion. A perfect spot for cooling off is the “Spirited Beats” exhibit in the tiny museum at the back of the Japan Pavilion that explores the anime (Japanese animation) mania. Cool and quiet.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Peanut-butter-and-jelly milkshake. Need we say more? Ever since the 50’s Prime Time Cafe opened, we dream of this calorie and carb-laden delight. Late afternoon, slip into the adjacent Tune-In Lounge, take a seat at the bar and order your shake. It’s an oasis of sweet sanity on a hot day. The calories may force you to skip dinner.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom. For grown-ups a cold Safari Amber Beer under the thatched roof at Dawa Bar in Africa with live African music is a delightful way to forget the heat. Or a frozen cappuccino from Royal Anadapur Tea Company in Asia . . . either way, you can cool off more at Kali River Rapids or just hang out in the gorilla area of the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail – we can spend hours watching these marvelous creatures in the lush vegetation.

Disney World offers passholders screening of ‘Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue’

Great news for pass holders from Kristin Ford at The Daily Disney.

For the third consecutive year, Walt Disney World passholders will be able to see an advance screening of the newest direct-to-DVD Tinker Bell movie.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue will be shown at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sept. 11 and 12 at Hollywood Studios. For the past two years, screenings have been in Magic Kingdom’s Exhibition Hall, but it looks like renovations have forced the change in venue.

This preview is for passholders only, and seating is limited to those who reserve it online at Disney’s passholder website. Adults can claim children ages 3 to 17 as their guests when making reservations, but the kids still must be passholders and show valid passes and the confirmation slip at the time of check-in. This is a welcome change and should help many families who were frustrated by the tedious reservation process in the past that required each family member to log in and reserve a seat. (Children younger than 3 must sit on an adult’s lap.)

Is Epcot Getting a New Country?

Epcot Getting New Country?
Spain could be moving in between France and Morocco

France: New Spain pavilion would likely reside by France.
Having completed an overhaul to Tomorrowland in 2009 and with work just underway on an expansion of Fantasyland at Walt Disney World, it seems their plans are never-ending. It would appear the park is considering adding a twelfth country to the World Showcase lineup, with Spain as the likely candidate.

There is a large enough space in between the France and Morocco pavilions to accommodate a new one in between them. Many will not remember or know this, but Spain was actually one of the countries considered for Epcot when it was being developed, but like Australia, Russia, Venezuela, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates, the countries didn’t have enough interest in sponsoring a pavilion at the time.

In a related note, Disney has also gotten permission to build a Monsters Inc. Roller coaster to be built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for the 2014 season. No details have been released, but some fans are excited that the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster may have some competition, but given the theme, it will more likely be a family-oriented coaster.

There is more to Orlando than Walt Disney World

Orlando is one of the top tourism destinations in the world. It features Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World. People come from every continent to take in these famous theme parks, and especially to meet Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
But there is another Orlando, a city full of unexpected smaller attractions, that you might want to take in when you want something a little different or just a break from the crowds at Disney World.
Kissimmee Rodeo.
No, that’s not a misprint. The rodeos of the west have come to the south-east and they are just as much fun. Try this for something different.
Inland manatees. Want to stay at an Official Walt Disney World Resort with pricing for every budget? Visit the Regal Sun Resort located directly across the street from Downtown Disney in Lake Buena Vista. This is another hidden resort gem in Orlando that features a Disney Character Breakfast every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
People often forget that Florida is more than just one big theme park and the host to spring break excess. It is also home to many natural wonders. Blue Spring State Park is tucked in between Orlando and Daytona Beach. Although it is an inland park, they have 153 manatees this season, more than ever before.
Mystery Dinner.
Half way between Orlando and Disney World, it’s no mystery why this show packs a full house. This is your chance to participate in a real murder mystery
Farm Animal Adventure.
Every child loves to pet animals. No, it does not replace Walt Disney World, but it might make a nice little break in the middle of the Disney excitement, and it is just a short distance south of the Disney park.
Ahoy there, Captain.
Not just the manatees have found their way inland. There are pirates in Orlando, and they offer an interactive family dinner spectacle.
Riverboat Cruise.
It’s not the Mississippi, but the “Rivership Romance” cruises along the St. Johns River, providing a first-hand connection with Florida’s rich, natural heritage. Dining and dancing accompany the natural beauty.
A taste of Chicago.
Don’t be surprised if you wind up eating with a gangster or two. Or if the police burst in on your dinner to make a bust. This is a living tribute to the legendary Gangland Chicago, and you are invited to participate in the action.
It’s a pity that these gems hide in the shadow of Planet Earth’s biggest theme park . You won’t want to miss Walt Disney World, but take some time out to see what others have missed. Your friends back home will be impressed.
